 Muslims worldwide are getting ready to celebrate Eid al-Fitr 2023, as the month-long fasting of Ramadan draws to a close. The date of the Eid varies, depending on the sighting of the moon, and this year, it is expected to begin on Saturday, April 22.

Lunar months are either 29 or 30 days long, so Muslims typically have to wait until the night before Eid to confirm its date. For countries that started Ramadan on March 24, local moon sighters will scan the horizon after sunset on Friday, April 21, to search for the crescent moon. 

If the new moon is visible (called Chaand Raat), then Eid will be celebrated the following day. Otherwise, Muslims will fast for one more day to complete the 30-day month. The announcement of the Eid is made via television, radio stations and mosques once the sighting of the moon has been confirmed.

No moon sighting in Pakistan on Thursday

There is no chance of moon sighting in Pakistan on Thursday due to cloudy weather, said Pakistan Meteorological Department. 

“The new moon of Shawwal 1444 AH will born on crossing conjunction point at 09-12 PST on 20-04-2023. Astronomical parameters of new moon and average cloud amounts at Pilot Balloon Observatories of Pakistan Meteorological Department are attached herewith," said Pakistan Met department in its official notification. 

UAE announces Eid celebration dates

The United Arab Emirates has asked its people to search for Shawwal crescent moon on Thursday. If the moon is spotted on Thursday, Eid will be declared on Friday. Based on the date of moon sighting, the UAE will give a four-day or a five-day break to its people. 

The UAE's moon-sighting committeee will declare the result shortly. Eid-ul-Fitr prayer timings for other cities have been announced. Prayer timing for Abu Dhabi is fixed at 6:12 am, 6:06 am for Al Ain, 6:10 am for Dubai, 6:07 am for Sharjah city, 6:06 am for Al Dhaid, and 6:07 am for Madam and Mleiha.

Eid to be celebrated in Canada on this date

Canada has also announced the date of celebration of Eid. The Association of Muslims in Canada has said that Eid-ul-Fitrs in 2023, will be celebrated on Friday, April 21, 2023. It also said that the exact date of celebration will depend upon the sighting of the moon of Shawwal 1444AH.

“This year, Eid ul Fitr 2023 is expected to be celebrated on Friday, April 21, 2023. However, the exact date is subject to the sighting of the moon of Shawwal 1444AH, 10th month of Islamic Calendar," said the Association of Muslims in Canada.

Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations in Malaysia to happen on this date

After failing to witness the Shawwal crescent on Thursday, Malaysian government has announced that the Eid in Malaysia will be celebrated on Saturday, April 22, 2023.

“AIDILFITRI | The Keeper of the Great Seal of the Kings, Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad announced that Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia falls on Saturday, 22 April 2023," tweeted a Malaysian private FM, Buletin FM, in Malay.

Majils Ugama Islam Singapore, statutory board of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth of the Government of Singapore, has announced that Eid-al-Fitr will be celebrated on April 22, 2023.

Oman moon-sighting committee to meet ahead of Eid celebrations

Ahead of Eid celebrations, Oman moon-sighting committee will meet at the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs on Thursday,

The Ministry has requested its citizens and residents to look out for the new moon by cooperating with field teams in the Wilayat or inform of any sighting to the subcommittees.

Eid celebration in Morocco

North African country, Morocco, will celebrate Eid-Al-Fitr on April 22,2023. Moroccan astronomer Hicham Aissaoui had earlier frecasted the mismatch in its date of Eid celebration with that of Saudi Arabia and other countries even before the start of Ramadan. Notably, this will be the first time in five years, when Morocco will complete a full month of 30 days fasting during Ramadan.

Kerala's local moon sighting committee adhere to the traditional islamic calendar and its practice of waiting for the actual sighting of the moon. It is the only Indian state where Eid-ul-Fitr date is determined by the moon sighting in Saudi Arabia.
