 A town official was running an illegal cryptocurrency mining operation from a crawl space under a school in the American state of Massachusetts, Reported by police. 

Nadeam Nahas, 39, who was an assistant facilities director in Cohasset, pleaded not guilty in court on Friday.

He is charged with fraudulent use of the School electricity and vandalising Cohasset High School, just outside Boston.

Because of the heavy computer calculations needed to verify the transactions, and such kind of mining uses huge amounts of electricity to perform well.

Authorities were 1st alerted to the possible crypto-mining operation in December 2021, It was said by Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley in a statement to the well known News platform BBC.


It was also added by Mr Quigley that the operation was being run from a remote crawl space that was discovered under the Cohasset High School by its director of facilities.

A number of computers were used for the alleged scheme

"Detectives interviewed the director, that said during a routine inspection of the Institute he noticed temporary ductwork, electrical wires and numerous computers that seemed out of place," Mr Quigley said.


Investigators discovered that computers in the crawl space, and got to know that they were being used in a cryptocurrency mining operation that was illegally plugged into the school's electrical system, said by police.


3-month later investigation with the help Department of Homeland Security and the US Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security, police identified the suspect as Mr Nadeam Nahas.


The mining operation had been running from April 2021 to December 2021 (8 months), and the electricity cost of high school about $17,500 (£14,600), according to court records seen by the Boston Globe.

Mr Nadeam Nahas worked for the Town of Cohasset from January 2021 until his resignation early last year.


One of well known News Channel asked Cohasset Public Schools district for comment, and were referred back to the police statement on the matter.


In a statement shared with World Info Website, said by the district it had co-operated with police throughout the investigations.
