The official language of the Netherlands is Dutch. This West Germanic language is almost entirely spoken by the whole population in the country. Nearly there are 23 million worldwide people speak the Dutch as their first language. The Dutch language is also spoken as a second language by about 5 million people. Dutch is the language that is the world's third most widely spoken Germanic language. The Dutch language is not only serves as the official language of the Netherlands country but it is also spoken as an official language in the country of Belgium, Aruba, Suriname, Sint Maarten and Curacao.

The Regional Languages of the Netherlands:

There are some regional languages of the Netherlands are officially recognized. They are:

Frisian:

Frisian language is a West Germanic language that is spoken by about 453,000 speakers in the Netherlands country. Most Frisian speakers live in the Friesland that is the province of the Netherlands country. It serves as the Co-official language of the Friesland’s province.

English:

The English language serves as the official language of the BES Islands of the Netherlands. Most of the schools in the region use the English language as the primary medium of instructions. The English language is also recognized as an official language by the Amsterdam Municipality but here is has a lower status than Dutch language. In Amsterdam, English language can be used as a means of communication but most administrative and publications work must use Dutch.

Papiamento:

The Papiamento is another language that is recognized as an official regional language in the Netherlands. Papiamento language is derived from the African and Portuguese languages. It is the official language in the Bonaire Municipality in the country of Netherlands. In some Caribbean Islands It is also widely spoken.

And here are the other non-officially recognized regional languages that are spoken in the Netherlands include:

Dutch Low Saxon:

The Dutch Low Saxon includes a variety of the Low Saxon dialects that are spoken in some parts of northeastern Netherlands. UNESCO classifies the language as vulnerable as the number of speakers of Dutch Low Saxon is steadily falling. The language is currently spoken by about 1,798,000 speakers.

Limburgish:

In the Limburg province of the Netherlands the Limburgish is spoken by about 825,000 speakers. The Limburgish language has a large number of dialects with significant variances.

The Immigrant Languages Spoken In the Netherlands:

The immigrant languages are spoken by those people those are immigrants to the Netherlands. Varieties of Turkish, Arabic, and Berber languages are the most common immigrant languages spoken in the Netherlands.

The Foreign Languages Spoken In the Netherlands:

English language that is considered as the world official language is also an extremely popular foreign language spoken in the Netherlands. A majority of the population of the Netherlands country (90 to 93%) speak the language. German is spoken by nearly 71% of the country’s population followed by French (29%) and the Spanish (5%).
